What does your role entail?

As Business Development Manager my role is not only to develop new project ideas and income streams into the Agency but also deliver training and mentoring to a wide range of entrepreneurs, all at different stages including pre start, start up and established.   In addition to this I am also responsible for enterprise education which involves running a host of different projects aimed at inspiring, educating and motivating young people to think about enterprise in their future careers.

I am also involved in promoting the brand of the Agency through a range of different channels including engaging with local stakeholders.

Describe a typical day for you?

In this job, every day is different and on some days what you think you have planned can very much change in an instant which keeps me on my toes.

A typical day comprises of either training or one to one meetings with all of my wonderful clients on the numerous programmes that we deliver here in the Agency.  These meetings are all about supporting and helping them to develop their business idea and on their entrepreneurial journey in any way that I can.  These meetings take up most of my day but I still have time to develop new ideas, connect and interact with others in networking and virtual meetings as well as dealing with any enquires that come through the door but there is always time for a cuppa.

For anyone considering starting up what advice would you have for them?

My advice would be to first of all think about why you want to start a business as sometimes it can be for the wrong reasons and so reflecting on the idea first can give you the clarity that you need.  Also, you need to have the passion for the idea as you will live, eat and breathe it but you also need to manage your goals realistically and always ask a question if you have one to ask.  Also, I would say make sure and work in the business but always be working on it as well.

What are the main issues and barriers facing developing businesses today?

Realising that sometimes we need to change our strategy and think outside the box in terms of what we offer to our customers and how we offer.  Now, more than ever, businesses are faced with difficult decisions but it is possible to adapt and survive, you just need to talk it through to realise it is possible.

Life outside current job

I am married with 2 little rescue dogs who are an integral part of my life outside of work so I love nothing more than taking them for walks to the beach and spending what time I can in the mountains of Donegal.   I am a very active person and working out is just part of everyday life for me.  I enjoy cooking and meeting up with friends to just catch up and stay connected.  I also have a passion for houses and have lost count as to the number we have built/refurbished over the years.  I also volunteer with Crosskennan Animal Sanctuary through bag packing and other fundraising activities.
