Karen Maguire: A Journey of Growth, Resilience and Legacy

Karen Maguire is a founder, mentor, and Chair of Employee Ownership Ireland. For nearly two decades, she led Relinea, a company she built from scratch in a male-dominated industry, becoming a role model for resilience, innovation, and purpose-led entrepreneurship.

From Idea to Action: The Early Days

In 2005, Karen left a sales role in a company that lacked customer focus. Convinced she could do better; she took a leap of faith. Without access to modern start-up ecosystems or accelerators, she relied on instinct, research, and determination. She secured a £20,000 bank loan and ordered her first container of goods from a carefully chosen supplier in China, who the company continues to work with today.

She launched her business, GRP Systems, from a repurposed farm shed with one employee, a JCB, and the support of her father, who was her right-hand man. The early years were tough. With maxed-out credit cards and long days, she juggled financial risk with the drive to educate the market about GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) products, a relatively unknown solution in Ireland.

Relinea

Working in a male-dominated industry, she focused not on fitting in, but on being the most informed and reliable person in the room. Her company quickly developed a reputation for quality and trust, with projects that began modestly and grew steadily in scope and ambition.

Strategic Growth and Brand Evolution

Karen’s approach was customer-first: rather than just selling products, she provided complete solutions, from design through fabrication to installation. She hired with consideration, focused on building sustainable roles that supported both the business and the people in it. She invested in capability and deliberately scaled the company without external investors, staying values-led and focused on long-term resilience. The emphasis was always on being the ‘easiest supplier to work with’.

By 2012, it was clear that the company’s original name, GRP Systems, was too generic. A rebrand gave rise to Relinea, a name that captured the company’s vision to “think different, build better.” As the business matured, so too did the brand identity, shifting in 2021 to focus on being Reliable and Resourceful, qualities the market had come to associate with the Relinea name.

Weathering Crises and Finding Opportunity

In 2008, just as Karen had finalised plans to build a new manufacturing facility, the financial crash hit. Banks withdrew support, but she pressed on, re-mortgaging her home to fund the expansion. As the Irish market contracted, she turned her focus to England, where increased competition was met with higher potential. Customers who were dissatisfied with current suppliers gave Relinea a chance.

Relinea continued to innovate, investing heavily in R&D to develop products that often outperformed existing solutions. The business scaled from taking £1,000 orders to securing a £1 million order in 2016. Support from Invest NI played a pivotal role in this growth, offering funding and strategy guidance.

Loss, Adversity, and Rediscovery

Karen experienced personal loss in 2017 with the passing of her father, this marked a turning point. Though she continued to lead the company, the emotional drive that once propelled her began to fade. Then, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic brought new challenges. Relinea closed briefly to prioritise the safety of staff and customers, but reopened quickly with new protocols in place, a decision made to protect the stability of the business, support the team, and maintain momentum in a changing market.

In responding to the crisis, Karen rediscovered her passion. The uncertainty of that time reignited her drive to protect what she had built and to push the business forward.

A Different Kind of Exit: Employee Ownership

With no children and succession planning on the horizon, Karen began exploring exit options. Traditional sale routes didn’t align with her values. A management buyout wasn’t feasible. Then she discovered the Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) model.

The EOT structure offered an alternative that allowed the business to remain local, preserving its culture, and rewarding the team that helped build it. It also avoided the risks associated with selling to outside investors. In March 2022, Relinea became one of the first companies in Northern Ireland to transition to employee ownership.

Though there were inevitable challenges in stepping back, Karen described it “like being the mother-in-law living in the house after the kids got married” but the transition was a success. The company continues to grow, with strong margins and high team engagement. Employees, now owners, have a renewed sense of responsibility and pride in the business.

A New Chapter: Advocacy and Mentorship

Since exiting Relinea, Karen has become a key advocate for employee ownership. She now mentors women leaders and serves as the first Chair of Employee Ownership Ireland. When she first considered the EOT model, there was little support or local guidance. That is changing. When Relinea became the first manufacturing business in Northern Ireland to transition to employee ownership in March 2022, there was just one EOT in the region. Since then, the number has grown to 17, with over 1,000 employee-owners, a shift now supported by the launch of Employee Ownership Ireland in January 2025.

She continues to champion the model across the UK and Ireland and recently helped secure funding from the Department for the Economy to expand awareness and training.

In addition to her professional advocacy, Karen has embraced personal revitalisation, becoming a Pilates instructor, finding joy in community and balance after years of high-stakes leadership.

Legacy and Lessons

Karen Maguire’s journey is marked by courage, grit, and a commitment to doing business differently. She grew a successful company in a challenging industry, weathered multiple crises, and created a legacy that puts people and purpose at its centre.

Her story offers key lessons: the power of building trust over chasing quick wins, the importance of innovation in sustaining growth, and the lasting value of planning an exit that reflects a founder’s values.

Above all, her journey reminds others, especially women entrepreneurs, that success doesn’t have to follow a conventional path, and that leadership can be both bold and deeply human.
